Rules for 2003 Season
Horseshoe Mountain Raceway

Roll Cage

Must consist of continuous hoops not less than 1.666 inch outside diameter with a wall thickness of at least .095 inch.    Must be frame-mounted in at least six places roll bar padding required in driver's compartment.  Must consist of a configuration of front and rear hoops connected by tubing on the sides or side hoops.  Driver’s head must not protrude outside cage with helmet on and strapped in driver’s seat.  Must have minimum of one cross bar in top halo of roll cage. Low carbon, mild steel tubing is recommended.  No brazing or soldering allowed.  Roll cage must be securely supported and braced.  Protection of feet is mandatory.  Bar across back of engine with vertical cars and rub rails, or similar protection.  No brace bars forward of cage may be higher than stock hood height.  Main cage no further forward than engine plate.

 Door Bars

A minimum of three driver side door bars, at least 1.5 inch O.D. with .095 wall thickness, must be as parallel with the ground as possible, and located perpendicular to the driver so as to provide maximum protection for driver, but without causing undue difficulty in getting in or out of the vehicle.  The sidebars must be welded to the front and rear of the roll cage members.  Must have at least one cross door bar, minimum 1.25 inch O.D., on passenger side of car, either horizontal or angled.  The sidebars must be welded to the front and rear of the roll cage members.   No brazing or soldering allowed.  Doorplates recommended.

 Safety

Aluminum bucket seat with headrest and leg restraints mandatory, mounted securely to frame and cage Must be mounted inside the frame rail ahead of the rear tire.  Five point SFI approved safety belts required. 3" lap belts & two 3" Shoulder belts with submarine belt minimum.  Must be mounted to frame and cage.  Belts must be date coded within two (2) years.  2 1/2  lb. dry type on board fire extinguisher is required.
Must be within drivers reach, and mounted in a quick release bracket below any window openings. A flame out, or similar system is highly recommended.

Brakes

 Brakes must be operated on all four wheels and must lock up all four wheels during inspection. No brake shut off devices allowed. Proportioning valves allowed, front to rear only.

Exhaust

Exhaust system must be mounted in such a way as to direct spent gases away from drivers compartment and away from areas of possible fuel spillage. Mufflers mandatory 95 dba @ 100 ft.

Fuel System

Racing fuel cells required and must be mounted by at least two steel straps, two inches wide around cell.  Fuel cells must be enclosed in metal container and must be mounted securely behind rear axle and protected by roll cage, Fuel cell must be a minimum of four inches ahead of rear bumper and no part of fuel cell shall be lower than protective tubing. Protective tubing must cover the rear and extend past both sides of fuel cell. Fuel cells must have check valves, and bladders are highly recommended. Fuel cells are limited to 32-gallon maximum capacity. Pick up cannot be underneath fuel cell.

Batteries

Batteries must be securely mounted and shielded.

All vehicles must be self-starting without being pushed or pulled. 

 MANUAL BATTERY DISCONNECT is required and may be mounted on dash or behind driver. It is to be clearly marked and be within reach of driver and safety personnel.

Fuel

May be either gasoline or alcohol.  No nitrous oxide.  No performance enhancing fuel additives of any kind.

Loose objects and/or weights must not be used in driver's compartment or outside of the body or hood area.  Any weights added to other areas of the vehicle must be securely mounted with (2) 1/2" bolts and should be painted white and have the car number on it.

Vehicle Weight

All vehicles will weigh a minimum of 2500 lbs. and will have no more than 58% maximum left side weight with driver at the beginning of any event.

Tires

Track spec tire only.
      a: bead locks allowed.
      b: conventional unaltered steel 8" wheel

      c: no wide 5 wheel adapters

Frames

Factory production full and complete 1960 or newer parallel American passenger car frames only. Frames may be cut in rear only at point not further than 36 inches from center of rear end housing. No front clips or tube type allowed. Frames may not be widened or narrowed and must be able to support roll cage on both sides. Must be full and complete both sides (Fabricated replacement frame rails will be allowed, must exactly replicate originals in all dimensions, subject to tech approval). Front cross member may be notched for radiator and/or steering clearance only.  Minimum frame and body height from ground is four inches with driver. (Exception is front cross member).

Suspension and Steering

Front suspension and steering must be unaltered approved OEM and be in stock location, and must be replaceable by stock parts.  A minimum .625 inch rod end and steel tube may replace outer tie rod end and adjustment sleeve.  Weight jack must be original centerline of spring.  Stock passenger car spindles only; no fabricated spindles.  Spindles can be ground for brake caliper clearance only.  Bottom A-frames cannot be altered or moved (exception: can weld shock mount on A-frame).  No offset or bearing type lower control arm bushings.  Front sway bar must be approved OEM.  Suspension, steering, and rear end parts must be steel.  Steering box must be steel approved OEM and must remain within original bolt pattern for type of frame used.  No rack & pinion allowed.  Steel steering shafts and knuckles only.  In cockpit steering may be modified to suit driver’s taste, but must be kept on left side of cockpit.  No center steering allowed. 

Tube type upper A-frames allowed and can be moved.

No coil over shocks allowed either front or rear.  No homemade coil overs used anywhere on car. 

No Jeep, Bronco (etc) or four wheel drive frames allowed.  No sports car frames or front wheel drives allow.

Rear of frame may be altered to accept leaf or coil springs; any coil spring must be at least 4.5 inches outside diameter.  No torsion bars allowed in rear. 

No hydraulic, ratchet or electric weight jacks anywhere on car. No air shocks or air bags allowed.

One steel coil spring per wheel only.  Additional shocks in other locations permissible.

Minimum wheel base is 108"on both sides of vehicle. Maximum overall width shall not exceed 78" from outside of tire to outside of tire.

Bodies

1970 or newer American compact passenger car only, no panel vans or station wagons.  Stock appearing front windshield and rear window support unit, painted roll bars not acceptable substitute.  May utilize a flat half windshield, with no wings, mounted to the roll cage.  Mirrors are not allowed.  Must have a minimum of three windshield bars in front of driver. 

Firewall and floorboards are mandatory; all body parts should be recognizable as factory production vehicle.  Fiberglass or metal duplicates of body parts are permitted.

Handmade body parts may be constructed of steel, aluminum, or fiberglass, but should be recognizable as factory production vehicle. Must have complete paint job. No plastic parts allowed.

Original roofline of vehicle must be maintained.  Must be fiberglass full size roof. No wings, spoilers or any other ground effects are allowed anywhere outside or inside car. Sail panels must closely resemble examples shown on body diagram. Any reinforcing lips on rear of sail panels must be a 180-degree bend.

All cars must display their assigned numbers on the top  & both sides.  The numbers must contrast the body paint.  The top number must be a minimum of 24" tall by 3" wide reading from the passenger side, and the door numbers must be a minimum of 18" tall by 3. wide.  Also a car number must be displayed on the outside front & rear of vehicle.

 Engine compartment will remain open, no side panels; hood sides may have a maximum 4" drop and must be enclosed at the rear of the hood.  Maximum allowed hood scoop height 6". Bodies should extend no further forward than back of block. Passenger side of body must be no further forward than rear of block. Rear of bodies to be solid panel at least 8" high. No panel in front of right door to engine compartment. No inner panels.

Driver and passenger side windows on both sides of car must have at least a 12-inch vertical opening. Driver's side window net required to be mounted so latch is at top front side of window.

No car covers or covers on suspension parts.

Transmissions

Transmissions must have at least two working forward & reverse gears, plus a neutral position. Only OEM production type transmissions will be allowed. No 5 speed transmissions, in/out boxes, or quick-change devices allowed.

Automatic transmissions must remain in OEM stock appearing automatic case. Original bell housing must remain. Must have an approved scatter shield or blanket. Scatter shield may be constructed of 1/4" x 4" steel 270 degrees around flex plate or flywheel.

 No transmitting or listening devices in car.  No electronic monitoring computer devices capable of storing or transmitting information except tachometers allowed on cars.

It is mandatory that one (1) 360 degree solid magnetic steel brackets (hoop), no less than two (2) inches wide and ¼ inch thick, be placed around the driveshaft and fastened to the cross member of the car no further back than 6. from the front of the driveshaft. Steel drive shafts only, painted white.

Bumpers

Bumpers must be used both front & rear; two front bumpers must be mounted frame end to frame end with the bottom loop parallel to the ground. Must be made of minimum 1 1/4" tubing and must be able to support car if lifted by wrecker.

 Rear bumper, nerf bars and bodies must not extend beyond width of rear tires, and must not contain any sharp edges.

 Rear bumper may be constructed of tubing or flat stock, and must protect fuel cell. Center of bumper, front and rear, must be 18", plus or minus 2" from ground. Rear bumper cannot be more than 2" wider than body on each side and cannot extend beyond the width of the rear tires.

Any fully magnetic steel passenger car type or truck rear end utilizing factory bolt ring and differential cover may be used.  No aluminum allowed, except lowering blocks, axle cap & drive plate. No quick-change devices allowed. No cambering of rear end allowed. One-piece drive flanges only. 

 Aluminum wheels, hubs, calipers, "A" frames or spindles, or any other aluminum suspension parts are not allowed.  Plastic wheels are not allowed. Calipers cannot be lightened and must be OEM.  Rotors cannot be lightened or drilled. Rotors may be re-drilled for different bolt patterns or larger studs.

Engines

    Option A:

Unaltered and complete General Motors sealed crate engine part # 88958602 with distributor must be used. Rear of engine (bell housing flange) must be mounted at least 72" forward from the centerline of rear axle. Engine offset must be kept within 2" of the centerline of the front cross member measured at the crankshaft. Maximum engine roll will be 5 degrees from vertical. Minimum engine height will be 12" measured from the front or rear center of the crankshaft to the ground. Minimum oil pan to ground clearance will be 4. measured with driver. 

One 2bbl or 4 bbl carburetor allowed utilizing a mechanical fuel pump mounted in factory location. Must be naturally aspirated. No fuel injection allowed. Electric fuel pumps not allowed.

Cooling system may be modified. 2qt catch can is required with overflow directed to ground inside frame rails. Radiators and oil coolers must not protrude above interior. Radiator must be mounted in front of engine. 

No engine modifications will be allowed! Valve springs, retainers, and keepers must remain OEM and their size and installation specifications must remain within OEM specifications. Motor mounts cannot be removed or altered. Castings and fittings cannot be changed. No machine work on outside of engine. No aftermarket engine parts allowed, OEM parts only!   

Any competitor that is deemed by the Chief Steward to have tampered with the factory seal on their crate engine will be fined $3,000 plus all purse and points monies earned for that season. The competitor will lose all season points and be suspended for the remainder of that season and the following season. All suspensions must be served and all fines paid before competitor can compete.

Option B:  (Available for 2003 Only)

 Note: Competitors electing Option B will be required to run the following handicaps;

 1. Engine will be required to run a 4 hole 1. restrictor plate mounted directly to the manifold with only a standard carburetor gasket between the restrictor and the manifold. Carburetor, spacers and manifold will be firmly mounted without vacuum leaks.

2. Cars will be required to weigh 2650 lbs and have no more than 55% maximum left side weight with driver at the beginning of any event.

3. Officials at their discretion may adjust the handicap.

 

Any American make engine may be used, as long as rear of engine (bell housing flange) is mounted at least 72" forward from the centerline of rear axle. Engine offset must be kept within 2" of the centerline of the front cross member measured at the crankshaft. Maximum engine roll will be 15 degrees from vertical. Minimum engine height will be 11" measured from the front center of the crankshaft to the ground. No aluminum heads or blocks!
